Find the Need Under the Complaint

Translate a complaint into the underlying need before proposing a response.

The move: translate the complaint before you answer it. Position versus need A position is what the person says they want or what they accuse: "You never care," "Move the deadline," "Join the call." A need is what the position is trying to protect: credibility, predictability, relief, fairness, trust, or influence. Why translation helps If you answer the position directly, you may defend, comply, or counterattack. If you identify the need, you can acknowledge what matters without surrendering judgment.
