Estimate with a range before you promise a date
Use optimistic, most likely, and pessimistic estimates to create a more realistic engineering task estimate.
Estimate a structural memo. Optimistic: 20 hours if the architect's model is clean. Most likely: 30 hours with normal cleanup. Pessimistic: 52 hours if framing levels need reconciliation. PERT expected estimate = (optimistic + 4 x most likely + pessimistic) / 6 The common trap is quoting the optimistic number because it is possible. Possible is not the same as probable.
