Start With The Variant View

Frame an equity-research idea as a variant-view hypothesis with clear evidence tests.

The move: start with the variant view, then build the evidence tree. Equity research pays for non-consensus judgment that is right for the right reason. That means the first job is not to collect attractive facts. The first job is to state the market expectation and the specific place where your work differs. Issue-tree thinking is useful because it turns a broad idea into testable branches. Start with the question: What must be true for this stock to outperform or underperform consensus? Then split the answer into clean buckets: revenue drivers, margin drivers, capital intensity, balance-sheet risk, and valuation multiple.…
