Use negative space to strengthen balance, contrast, and focal hierarchy.
Negative space is part of the dish's visual structure. The most common beginner plating reflex is to fill gaps. A sauce dot goes in one corner, a herb sprig in another, a crumb line across the rim. The plate may look more worked, but it often reads worse. Every added mark asks for attention. Use empty space to frame the focal point. If the main element sits on a thirds point, open space around it makes the placement feel deliberate. A support element can counterweight the focal point without covering the rest of the plate.
