The move: turn every FX quote into a plain-language sentence before drawing a conclusion. A currency pair always has a base currency and a quote currency. The base is the thing being priced; the quote is the unit used to price it. EUR/USD 1.0850 means one EUR costs 1.0850 USD. USD/JPY 157.20 means one USD costs 157.20 JPY.
