Start with customer value

Define value from the customer problem before selecting a lean improvement.

The move: Value is not what your team is busy doing; value is the customer problem getting solved. Lean is a way of thinking about creating needed value with fewer resources and less waste. The mechanism is focus: when a team defines value from the customer problem, it can distinguish useful work from internal motion. Without that definition, improvement becomes local optimization. A report gets prettier, a handoff gets faster, or a meeting gets shorter, while the customer still waits.
