The lifting index in plain English
Explain lifting index as actual load divided by the NIOSH recommended weight limit for the task.
The move: use lifting index as a redesign signal. NIOSH calculates a Recommended Weight Limit for a specific lift. Then the Lifting Index compares the actual load with that limit. In plain English: "How big is this lift compared with what this task setup recommends?" A higher lifting index does not mean the worker is weak. It means the task has risk factors built into it.
