The move: make every mentoring cycle include practice, relationship, and support. The 70-20-10 idea says development comes heavily from job experience, meaningfully from other people, and partly from formal learning. For mentoring, the danger is overusing the 20 and forgetting the 70. A good pair can talk insightfully for months without changing work behavior.
