Separate Important Work From Loud Work
Classify competing work by urgency and importance before choosing what to do first.
The move: do not let the loudest task become the highest priority. Urgency is a pressure signal Urgency asks, "Does this need attention now?" It is useful for incidents, deadlines, and blocked people. It is unreliable when every stakeholder can manufacture urgency with a subject line. Importance is an outcome signal Importance asks, "Will this materially change the goal, risk, customer, or relationship?" Important work often arrives without drama, which is why it gets displaced. The matrix creates a pause Classify before acting: do now, schedule, delegate, or drop. The value is the short interruption between stimulus and sequence.
