Measure cache hits like a process metric
Build a small measurement loop for cache hit rate, latency, and cost before refactoring prompts broadly.
The move: treat cache performance as a process, not a hunch. DMAIC maps cleanly to prompt caching. Define the workflow: one endpoint, one prompt version, one model family. Measure baseline input tokens, cached tokens, time to first token, request volume, and cost. Analyze misses by looking at prefix churn, token thresholds, request cadence, and dynamic content before the boundary. Improve one variable. Control it by versioning the prompt and watching the same metric after release. Define Name the workflow and the user value. "Claims summary endpoint for support agents" is better than "AI costs."
