Name the yes before the no

Write a no that starts by naming the priority, value, or commitment being protected.

The first yes is the anchor. It names the priority, value, or commitment that makes the no responsible. Without the first yes, a refusal can sound like avoidance. With it, the other person can see the principle: quality, customer trust, delivery focus, team capacity, or an already-committed deadline. Use this sequence: Name the protected priority Keep it concrete: "I want the renewal deck to be accurate" is better than "I care about quality."
