Separate strategic silence from avoidance
Tell the difference between a constructive strategic pause and avoidant silence.
The move: do not use silence as a professional-looking escape hatch. Strategic silence is intentional. It gives people time to think, regulate, listen, or reveal information. Avoidant silence dodges discomfort and leaves the other person carrying uncertainty. The Three-Part Test Purpose: What work is the silence doing? Boundary: How long will the silence last?
