Separate tasks, skills, knowledge, and abilities

Classify taxonomy candidates as tasks, skills, knowledge areas, abilities, or traits before turning them into skill nodes.

Do not make one column do five jobs. Taxonomy drift often starts when every useful phrase becomes a skill. A role profile may contain tasks, tools, knowledge, behaviors, and traits, but they should not all become the same node type. The designer's job is to preserve the distinction. Task A job activity someone performs. Skill A learned capability that can transfer across tasks. Knowledge Facts, concepts, rules, or tool understanding. Ability or trait A capacity or tendency that may influence performance but is not usually trained like a micro-skill. Once the type is clear, the next design choice becomes easier.…
