Survey Before You Read

SQ3R starts with Survey because structure saves attention. Before line-by-line reading, inspect title, summary, headings, visuals, conclusion, appendix labels, and repeated terms. Cornell's reading systems describe surveying as a way to see the main ideas before the detailed read. The mechanism is mental indexing: when you know the structure, details have somewhere to attach. Headings become buckets; charts become signposts; the conclusion shows what the author thinks matters. Surveying is not lazy reading.
