Separate numbering, addressing, and naming
Distinguish telephone numbers, network addresses, and names when diagnosing call routing problems.
The move: name the identifier before debugging it. An E.164 number, an IP address, and a SIP URI answer different questions. The E.164 number answers: what public telephone identity did someone dial? The IP address answers: where can packets be sent right now? The SIP URI or DNS name answers: which logical user or service should signaling target? Telephony platforms constantly translate among these identifiers. A dialed number may be normalized with a country code, matched to a route pattern, sent to a carrier trunk, rewritten into SIP signaling, then resolved to a registered endpoint.
