Use a test coupon to choose and verify a SMAW amperage setting within a recommended range.
Set amperage for a 1/8 inch low-hydrogen electrode on a flat fillet practice coupon without using the production part as the test. PDCA parameter setup: plan from the allowed range, run a short coupon, check bead evidence, then adjust one step. The common shortcut is welding the part at whatever setting the machine had last, then chasing undercut, sticking, or a cold bead after the damage is already on the work.
