Start With The Process Boundary
Define the start, end, customer, and output of a process before improving it.
A process boundary is a thinking tool, not paperwork. SIPOC works because it forces a team to step above the argument and name the system: suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, and customers. At process-basics level, that boundary matters more than a perfect map. If the team debates every tiny task before naming the customer and output, the conversation collapses into local preferences. SIPOC also separates an input from a step: “approved refund amount” is an input; “issue refund” is a process step.
