Protect Metrics From Goodharting

Design decision metrics that stay connected to the real outcome when incentives change.

Goodharting happens when people optimize a proxy so aggressively that the proxy disconnects from the outcome. A healthy metric system uses a target, a guardrail, and a periodic reality check. The target focuses effort. The guardrail protects the wider outcome. The reality check asks whether the number still means what we think it means. This is especially important when bonuses, rankings, launches, or executive attention attach to a number.
