Put Context in the Grid Before You Prompt

Short prompt, rich cells. That is usually the most maintainable pattern for spreadsheet AI. Prompt for the operation Ask the model to summarize, classify, rewrite, or extract. Keep the instruction stable so it can be reused across rows. Put the facts in ranges Referenced cells make the task refreshable and auditable. They also let teammates see what evidence the output was based on. Avoid prompt inflation If every row needs a handcrafted paragraph of context, the workflow will break the moment the sheet grows. Use the grid for data and the prompt for intent.
