Quick Reference For Usable Error Messages

Recall and apply a compact pattern for writing recoverable error messages.

PIA What does PIA stand for in error copy? We do not know the exact backend cause. Your line Then say what we do know: the upload did not complete, the draft is saved, and the user can retry or use a supported file. Hide uncertainty behind "Something went wrong." It is truthful without abandoning recovery. Which is stronger? Specific repair copy reduces user effort. Where should an error message appear? Close to the source of the problem. Proximity helps users connect the message with the control they need to repair.
