Use the synopsis, options, exit status, and examples of a command reference before running an unfamiliar command.
Man pages are risk controls in plain text. Read them in the order that answers: what will this touch, how wide can it go, and how will I know it worked? Synopsis First The synopsis shows command shape: options, required operands, optional operands, and repeated arguments. Do not skip it.
