Read the Room Before You Read the Words

Identify when a cross-cultural message needs context-checking before response.

Words are data, not the whole message. The concept Meyer describes communication differences along a context scale: some teams expect meaning to be explicit, while others expect listeners to read relationship, hierarchy, history, and timing. Hofstede adds why those cues can become important in organizations: hierarchy, collectivism, and uncertainty avoidance shape how safe it feels to say no directly.
