Use UDL barrier analysis to distinguish universal design from individualized accommodations
Do not make the accommodation system repair predictable design barriers. Universal First If many learners could benefit from the support without changing the learning goal, build it into the lesson. Examples: captions, accessible files, vocabulary previews, clear success criteria, and choice of response mode. Individual When Needed If a student needs a support because of a documented disability-related need, keep it in the IEP and make implementation explicit. Repair Access Defects Some issues are neither UDL nor accommodation. A scanned, unreadable PDF or unlabeled image is simply inaccessible and should be fixed before instruction begins.
