Build the Baseline Before Reading Change
Use baseline behavior and language before interpreting a possible deception cue.
Baseline first means you compare a person with themselves. Build baseline on neutral ground. How much detail do they normally give? Do they correct themselves? Do they pause before answering? Do they use eye contact? Do they gesture? How do they handle uncertainty when nobody is accusing them? Then watch for deviation around the consequential claim. A baseline change matters most when it lines up with a statement gap: the person who was chronological becomes vague, the person who normally corrects details becomes overly perfect, or the person who normally names sources suddenly uses broad summaries.
