Find the Inciting Metric

Identify the metric that creates narrative movement by changing what the audience believes or risks.

The inciting metric is the number that makes the current plan feel unfinished. Change Look for a number that changes the audience's view of reality: a missed threshold, a sudden segment split, or an unexpected driver. This is the business equivalent of the event that starts the plot. Consequence Attach the number to a consequence. Renewal risk, wasted sales time, delayed cash, missed adoption, and customer confusion all create stakes the audience can evaluate. Choice A useful inciting metric points to a choice. If no decision changes after the number is shown, it is context, not the story's engine.
