Quick Reference: SCOPE for Hardening Outputs

Recall a five-part checklist for designing safer structured-output workflows.

SCOPE S Shape Define the object or tool arguments clearly enough that another system knows what structure to expect. C Constraints Use required fields, enums, and closed objects where downstream behavior depends on stable values. O Operation boundary If the next step is a real side effect, prefer a tool or function contract over descriptive JSON. P Post-validation Check live IDs, thresholds, permissions, and other facts the schema cannot know on its own. E Escalation Decide when a failure or a risky-but-valid output should retry, clarify, or stop for human review.
