Map Error Before You Field
Identify sampling, coverage, nonresponse, measurement, and processing error in a survey plan.
Use a Total Survey Error map as a pre-flight review. Write the estimate you want at the top, then ask how it could be wrong at each stage. Coverage: who never had a chance to be invited? Sampling: who had a chance but was selected unevenly? Nonresponse: who is less likely to answer, and would their answer differ? Measurement: which words, scales, order, or mode could change the answer? Processing: where can deduping, recoding, translation, or weighting introduce mistakes? The point is not academic purity. It is to choose the cheapest design move that reduces the biggest threat.
