Inventory Is the First Control
Explain why asset and software inventory is the control that makes other administration controls possible.
Inventory is the control that gives every other control a target. A mature inventory has at least four facts: asset identity, owner, business purpose, and current technical state. For software, the same idea applies to installed packages, versions, licenses, and unsupported components. The important habit is reconciliation. A static spreadsheet ages immediately. A scan without ownership creates noise. A ticket queue without discovery misses shadow systems. Put the sources against each other: endpoint management, directory, cloud account, vulnerability scanner, DHCP, DNS, and procurement.
