Understanding Malware Classification and Taxonomy

Classify different types of malware and understand their behavioral characteristics.

Malware comes in many forms—viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, spyware—each with distinct propagation methods and damage mechanisms. Understanding this taxonomy is foundational to threat detection. A virus replicates by attaching to host programs; a worm spreads independently through networks; a trojan disguises itself as legitimate software. By learning the defining characteristics of each type, security analysts can better recognize threats in the wild and predict their likely behavior. This classification also informs which detection techniques are most effective against specific threats.
