Worked Example: Hear No Without Collapse

Respond to a no by exploring the other person's need instead of escalating or giving up immediately.

Request made: "Would you be willing to give me weekly feedback on these drafts?" Response received: "No, I can't commit to that." A no is a clue to another need, not proof that the relationship is closed. People often hear no as disrespect or indifference. That interpretation can be true sometimes, but jumping there too fast collapses the chance to learn what is actually preventing cooperation. Step 1 Do not re-argue your case immediately.
