Apply interest-based negotiation techniques to reach agreements that satisfy multiple stakeholders' underlying needs.

Project managers negotiate constantly: scope with clients, timelines with executives, resources with other departments, quality standards with engineers, contracts with vendors. Traditional positional negotiation (I want X; you want Y; we split the difference) often produces resentment and weak agreements. Principled negotiation, based on the seminal work 'Getting to Yes,' separates people from the problem and focuses on underlying interests rather than stated positions.
