The 10-Minutes-a-Day Habit Guide
Why the smallest possible learning unit beats the biggest course catalog: the memory science, the habit mechanics, and a six-week rollout plan for making daily learning the default without adding an hour to anyone's calendar.
The short version
Ten minutes a day out-hours the 40-hour average.Corporate learning has an arithmetic problem: the average employee gets 40 hours of training a year, forgets most of it within a week, and multitasks through 70% of it. The fix is not more hours. Ten minutes every workday already equals about 42 hours a year, slightly more than the average.

The case against the big course
Memory is a leaky bucket.The classic forgetting curve, first measured by Ebbinghaus in the 1880s and replicated ever since, is brutal about single-session learning. On average, half of new information is gone within an hour, around 70% within a day, and up to 90% within a week if nothing reinforces it. A two-day workshop is, from memory's point of view, a large deposit into a bucket with a hole in it.

Most corporate training masses content into a single session and tests, if at all, immediately, when recall is trivially easy and predicts nothing. Any format that delivers learning in one dose is fighting biology.

The two levers that reverse the leak
Spacing and retrieval do the heavy lifting.Two well-replicated effects reverse the leak. Spacing: the same material, revisited at expanding intervals, is retained two to three times better, a roughly 200% long-term improvement across hundreds of experiments. Retrieval: being made to recall something, through a quiz or a scenario decision, strengthens memory far more than re-reading it.
Both effects are large, and both require many small sessions to exist at all. That is the real argument for daily, not a preference for short formats.

The unit of corporate learning should be a small, daily, retrieval-heavy rep. Not because short is trendy, but because spacing and retrieval are the only two levers with effect sizes this large, and both need many small sessions to exist.

The attention math

It is where those hours land.

Habit mechanics
Why day 40 is the danger zone.A daily practice lives or dies as a habit, and habit formation is measurable. In the standard UCL study, a repeated behavior took 66 days on average to become automatic, with a range from 18 to 254 days depending on the person and the behavior. Three design rules follow.

Anchor: attach the rep to an existing routine
"After I get my coffee, I do my lesson" beats "I will learn at some point today." The anchor does the remembering, and willpower is a terrible scheduler. The best anchors are early in the day and already daily.
Friction: make starting cost one tap
Habits fail at the start line. If the lesson sits behind a login, a menu and a choice, the day's willpower budget goes on navigation. The right dose is served, not browsed, so the only decision left is "now."
Tolerance: design for missed days, loudly
The same UCL research found that single missed days barely dent habit formation. What kills it is people quitting after a miss. Build the comeback into the product and the culture so a missed day costs one day, never the habit.

Novelty carries weeks one to three. Automaticity does not arrive until around week nine. The gap between them, roughly day 25 to day 60, is where programs die quietly. That is exactly where the manager rituals in the rollout earn their keep.

The six-week rollout playbook
Six weeks to default behavior.The plan runs in three phases, built for a 50 to 500-person organization. The whole point is to carry the first reps across the day-40 trap, which is why the manager rituals are agreed before launch, not bolted on after enthusiasm dips.
Week 0, prime before anyone gets a login
Leadership names the why in one paragraph: which skills, which business reason, and what working will look like at week six. Every person picks an anchor moment and writes it down, public, tiny and voluntary. Managers agree the two rituals before launch.
Weeks 1 to 2, launch and protect the first reps
The daily lesson goes live, personalized per role, ten minutes as a hard cap. Managers open one weekly meeting with two minutes on what people learned that week, a signal and not surveillance. Watch one number only: the share of people active at least three days a week.
Weeks 3 to 6, hold and cross the day-40 trap
A fortnightly team look at the skill heatmap shows what moved, who is stuck, and one shout-out. Personal comeback nudges go to anyone dark for five or more workdays, from the manager, one line, zero guilt. At week six, publish the before and after and decide scale-up with data.
Ritual one is the weekly two-minute learning ask. Ritual two is the fortnightly heatmap look. Progress made visible is the strongest fuel through the mid-program slump, which is exactly when reps get skipped.
Protect the first reps, then make progress visible with two manager rituals until the habit is automatic.
