Why this matters An error budget converts reliability from a vague value into a spendable allowance. If an SLO allows 0.1 percent failure in a 28-day window, that 0.1 percent is the budget the team can spend through incidents, risky changes, dependency faults, and normal variance. The mechanism is shared economics: product speed and reliability draw from the same budget, so the argument moves from who cares more to how much risk is left.
